World famous chemist Alexander "Sascha" Shulgin adding his signature to the hundred plus already on the original "Can You Pass the Acid Test?" poster, one of the real treasures of the collection. This is essentially the Magna Carta and Declaration of Independence of the Golden Era of Psychedelia, when it was still legal. It's also the coolest and probably the most valuable poster in the world.
Original Cast Members of the 1960s, Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow, outlaw musicologist and archivist Glenn Allen Howard and David Nelson of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and DNB backstage at the Great American Music Hall, posing as the three wise guys from "Orient Are," wherever the hell "Orient Are" is.
Jerry Garcia, Glenn Allen Howard and Steve Brown New Year's Eve, 1992. Glenn is holding a few of a large stack of Ken Nordine records moments before we all crashed David Gans' NYE broadcast with the voice of "Word Jazz," along with Lord Buckley, the greatest jazz poet of all time. As Jerry, Bob Weir, Dan Healy, Steve and Glenn testified as to his influence, he was moved to tears. Ken had no idea that he had been a major influence on the Dead and the Bay Area Hip scene of the late 50s and 60s. Randy Wood of Dot records, signed Nordine for the Dot label (home of Lawrence Welk and Pat Boone, to give you an idea how edgy they were, ) soley because Fred Astaire said he loved him, and Wood claimed his records didn't ever sell. Randy Wood is also in the Hall of Shame for physically destroying most copies of a Jack Kerouac album released on Dot when he found out what it was.
Glenn backstage with Advisory Board member Wavy Gravy at the Kate Wolf Festival 2009. Saint Misbehavin' (aka Hugh Romney) has been on the scene since like almost before there was a scene to be on.
Backstage at SF's Independent with the notorious No-Wave Avant-Gardeners Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth for a rare small club gig. I love modern bands whose roots go really deep, and SY is as down with Jelly Roll Morton and Bukka White as they are with Berio, Ives and Ornette.
Glenn, Board Member Simmy Makhijani and the Great Maestro hisself, Taj Mahal backstage at the Freight & Salvage.
